Integrity Wall -
Education and Other
The people and organizations on these pages include civil servants, organizations and other individuals/entities who stood up for the laws that protect our citizens, our data, our society and justice. Some people resigned rather than compromise their integrity or violate federal statute. Some retired or were fired instead. Others have been targeted by the regime and/or are standing firm against tyranny. In every instance, each chose the path that illustrates the best of our nation despite the difficulties or risks to themselves, rather than the easy route. In some cases, it was to stand and fight (or be fired); in others, it meant resigning or retiring. Their examples sustain us and remind us to do the next right thing.

This nation was founded on the right to free speech and open expression, and our libraries are the embodiment of that promise. Libraries are designed to be community-based safe harbors of free thought. Libraries offer ideas. This is their fundamental role in our democracy and why they are so vital. This act of violence is not just a crime against the public catalog of literature that was destroyed, but also is a violation of the marketplace of ideas that is a bedrock principle of American life."

Anelise
Feldman
Freshman,
Yarmouth High School,
Maine
On May 2, 2025, Ms. Feldman finished second in a 1600 meter race at a Maine high school track meet. State Representative Laurel Libby posted on X about the meet bemoaning the fact that the first place competitor was transgender.

"I am extremely proud of the effort I put into the race and the time that I achieved...I don’t feel like first place was taken from me. Instead, I feel like a happy day was turned ugly by a bully who is using children to make political points.
We are all just kids trying to make our way through high school. Participating in sports is the highlight of high school for some kids. No one was harmed by Soren’s participation in the girls’ track meet, but we are all harmed by the hateful rhetoric of bullies, like Rep. Libby, who want to take sports away from some kids just because of who they are."

In their letter, they said:
"Tech workers must resist complicity. As Musk’s DOGE operation dismantles U.S. government institutions under the guise of exposing corruption, opposition remains silent. Companies are placating Trump’s administration, suppressing dissent, and aligning with his xenophobic, sexist, and oligarchic agenda. Government databases are already erasing references to transgender people and gender-affirming care. These injustices could be facilitated by the very software infrastructure we help build."

On May 8, 2025, the New York Times published an Opinion Guest Essay by Dr. Parsons, West Point Is Supposed to Educate, Not Indoctrinate. The professor is resigning his position teaching philosophy at the end of the term.
Normally, COTG would place this in the Letters of Support section below, but this essay is especially powerful and should receive greater attention, in our opinion.
"Then there’s the message that the cadets are learning about West Point. Cadets are told constantly that they are to lead a life of honor, to choose the harder right over the easier wrong, to have moral courage. But now they are learning that these are just empty slogans. What actual leaders do, it seems, is whatever protects their jobs. I fear the cadets will remember this lesson for the rest of their lives."

The consequences may be measured in preventable injuries, hospitalizations, and lives lost."

“This is an appalling and lawless attack on the independence of our country’s product safety watchdog. Anyone who cares about keeping their family safe should oppose this move and demand that it be reversed. This isn’t really about the individual leaders, as commendable as they are. It’s about whether Congress can maintain a federal agency that takes strong action to protect the public, based on scientific evidence and insulated from political whims."

In a letter, Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe stated:
"It has been painful to watch one group of refugees, selected in a highly unusual manner, receive preferential treatment over many others who have been waiting in refugee camps or dangerous conditions for years. I am saddened and ashamed that many of the refugees who are being denied entrance to the United States are brave people who worked alongside our military in Iraq and Afghanistan and now face danger at home because of their service to our country. I also grieve that victims of religious persecution, including Christians, have not been granted refuge in recent months."

“In my country, we are fighting like hell for the democracy we once took for granted. That affects all of us here, because the arts are democratic, art is inclusive and brings people together, like tonight. Art looks for truth. Art embraces diversity, and that’s why art is a threat.
“That’s why we are a threat to autocrats and fascists. America’s philistine president has had himself appointed head of one of our premier cultural institutions (the Kennedy Center). He has cut funding and support to the arts, humanities and education."

"All that we heard were personal attacks and threats that nobody else should try to use their microphones or voice in public or they’ll be shut down. Now that’s not allowed in this country that we call America. Part of free speech is open discussion. Part of democracy is healthy public discourse."
"The name-calling is so beneath us. Bruce has always been as pro-American with his values and liberty, and his justice has always remained intact. And I’m saying this now to be sure this freedom to speak will still exist in a year or two when we come back to this microphone.”

Universities are under attack. Freedom of speech is under attack. An insidious fear is reaching through our schools, our businesses, our homes and into our private thoughts. The fear to speak. In America? If our government is – in Lincoln’s words – “of the people, by the people and for the people” – then why are we afraid to speak?"

Neil
Young

On May 20, 2025, Mr. Young wrote on his website, Neil Young Archives:

You shut down FEMA when we needed it most. That’s your problem Trump. STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT ROCKERS ARE SAYING. Think about saving America from the mess you made. Taylor Swift is right. "A cascade of draconian government measures has already led to so much uncertainty, so much pain, and suffering in this country and across the globe—and more has been threatened. The outrage you must feel, the outrage so many feel, also must surely leads us to a new appreciation. Appreciation for the rule of law and due process, which till now we took for granted—because this is America after all! And appreciation for those committed to truth—veritas--at a time when the absence of truth has come to feel almost normal. We find new appreciation of actions that demonstrate thoughtfulness, decency, generosity, kindness, humility, and service to community."

“Given that the selected papers were reviewed for scholarly merit, this order amounts to shaping conference content for reasons having nothing to do with scholarship. While I keenly understand the difficulties of our moment, vetting speakers and papers is not a good place to be for an American institution of higher education...
"I wish the record to be clear that I do not agree with this decision and do not wish to be associated with its implementation. Consequently, I tender my resignation as department chair effective immediately.”

Huerta

“What happened to me is not about me; This is about something much bigger. This is about how we as a community stand together and resist the injustice that’s happening. Hard-working people, and members of our family and our community, are being treated like criminals. We all collectively have to object to this madness because this is not justice. This is injustice. And we all have to stand on the right side of justice.”

"Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred is only a means to an end, and that end his his own glorification. That's his spiritual nourishment."

Bob
Costas
Sportscaster
On June 9, 2025, during his speech accepting the Fred Dressler Leadership Award from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, he said:
"Because he is the president, to a certain extent, who he is and what he does, and what is done in his name, has been normalized so that responsible journalists have to pretend that there’s always two sides to this. There really isn’t two sides to much of what Donald Trump represents.
If someone says – and the idea that you have to find somebody who will not just defend Donald Trump, but valorize it, even on CNN or wherever else, just in the name of being balanced – look, if someone is contending that the Earth is flat, in order to appear objective, you are not required to say, “Well, maybe it might be oblong.” No, it’s not.
Certain things are just true. And regrettably, something that’s true in America right now is that the President of the United States has absolutely no regard, and in fact has contempt, for basic American principles and basic common decency."

"It’s time for all of us to stand up...
"I know many of you are feeling deep anxiety, stress, and fear. But I want you to know that YOU are the antidote to that fear and anxiety.

After a half-day of interrogations, he was returned to Australia.
"I do not yet know if I will be allowed back, or if I have been banned, as can happen to travellers accused of misrepresenting their experience with drugs. But I fear that writing about this, and speaking to the media, as I have done, will trigger further reprisals from the U.S. government. I’m afraid that I will be banned for good, if I haven’t been already, or that the information on my phone, which I handed over to them, will be used against me. But I was targeted for writing honestly about what was in front of me—the same thing I’m doing now. That is worth its price."

“The walls are closing, the camera systems are getting AI upgrades, you have to censor what you say or unidentified masked men will show up at your home, at your work, at your church. One day, leaving the museum, I stepped into an actual police state – rows of police assaulting peaceful protesters.”

Nancy Wilson
Musician,
Heart
On June 14, 2025, after Trump's vanity military parade, Ms. Wilson posted the following on Instagram:
"Earlier today, during a parade held in support of our nation’s military and organized by President Donald Trump, the song “Barracuda” by Heart was played without permission or authorization from us.
“Barracuda,” written and performed by Ann and I, is a powerful piece of music that was never intended for political use. As daughters of a U.S. Marine Corps major, we hold a deep and abiding respect for the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces. On a day meant to honor that service, it’s important that music used in such settings reflects not only the tone of the event but also the wishes of the artists who created it."

And I cannot stand to see our community being violated, profiled, abused and ripped apart. ALL people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and human rights. #CityOfImmigrants"

“We can make nice and not say that and we won’t get investigated. Or we can do our job, which is to call the indecent attack on our sector indecent, wrongheaded, lawless, authoritarian, fascistic—choose your words. Not that it would change anyone’s mind, but to say: This is not okay. That is my message.”

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
Episcopal conference of the Catholic Church in the United States
On June 26, 2025, the USCCB sent a letter to every United States senator about the "Big Beautiful Bill."
"However, we must also urge you to make drastic changes to the provisions that will harm the poor and vulnerable. This bill raises taxes on the working poor while simultaneously giving large tax cuts to the wealthiest. Because of this, millions of poor families will not be able to afford life-saving healthcare and will struggle to buy food for their children. Some rural hospitals will likely close. Cuts will also result in harming our environment.
"Furthermore, the Senate proposal continues to promote an enforcement-only approach to immigration
that is unjust and fiscally unsustainable. The bill would erode access to legal processes, including life-
saving humanitarian protections, while paving the way for families and children to become the focus of unmitigated enforcement efforts."

The invitations to the show, as well as the labels inside the shirts enhanced the political statement.
“Today and as of yesterday, ICE is attacking the town of Huron. There are tanks rolling through the streets, and there are armed militia surrounding homes. So it’s a state of horror. "I could see patterns. It’s very tribal. Trump was successful in almost stealing red, white and blue as their symbol. They all call themselves patriots on this wall. They all bought into the big lie that the election was stolen."

George
Retes

On July 10, 2025, ICE detained Mr. Retes during an immigration raid and kept him for three days, despite Mr. Retes identifying himself as a US citizen and employee at site.

“It’s either the $20 million or an official apology from the administration, because, ultimately, my goal is not self-enrichment. I don’t want this money just because I need money. What I want is actual accountability. Real, real accountability against the injustices that happened against me with the malicious prosecutions that I was targeted for all this."
